‘SNL’ returns with a new Joe Biden looking to unite Democrats

(CNN) –Saturday night Live“He’s back, and with him came a new president Joe biden.

The NBC variety show returned Saturday for another premiere and opened its 47th season with new cast member James Austin Johnson in the role of Biden.

“What’s new, what’s good?” Said Johnson’s Biden, kicking off the premiere. “How was everyone’s summer? Mine was bad.”

Johnson’s Biden added that the bright side is that he “went all summer without falling down the stairs even once.”

Then the new Biden drew a group of fellow Democrats from different ends of the political spectrum. That included Senator Kyrsten Sinema, played by Cecily Strong, and Senator Joe Manchin, played by Aidy Bryant, as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, played by Melissa Villasenor, and Rep. Ilhan Omar, played by Ego Nwodim.

“Is it me or does it look like all the ‘Scooby-Doo’ characters at the same time?” Johnson’s Biden said of Strong’s Sinema.

After thanking Biden for not “calling me Kamala,” Nwodim’s Omar said it was “designed in a laboratory to cause a heart attack in Tucker Carlson.”

Johnson’s Biden was trying to unite the two camps in hopes of getting the infrastructure bill through. It did not work.

“I’m saying we need at least $ 300 billion in clean energy tax credits,” said Ocasio-Cortez de Villaseñor.

“And I say zero dollars,” Bryant’s Manchin replied.

“See? Same page!” Said Johnson’s Biden.

Johnson’s Biden kept trying to find common ground. He asked if everyone likes roads, for example. Strong’s Sinema said she doesn’t want roads.

“No roads?” Biden asked of Johnson. “Why?”

“Chaos,” she replied.

The group was then joined by other Democrats including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, played by Pete Davidson, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, played by Alex Moffat. They were both there to promote books. The name of Schumer’s book was “Sandwiches that I have liked and tried,” while Cuomo’s was titled “Whoops.”

Johnson’s Biden said that fundamentally the Democrats, despite their differences, are all the same.

Davidson’s Cuomo then chimed in: “Fuck!”

Then the entire cast kicked off the final season with the traditional banner of “Live from New York … It’s Saturday night!”
