Death of Michel Tubiana, Honorary President of the Human Rights League – The HuffPost

DISAPPEARANCE -Lawyer Michel Tubiana, Honorary President of the Human Rights League (LDH), died Saturday, October 1 at age 69, announced the association, which deplores the disappearance ofa “tireless activist” defense of human rights.

Secretary General of the LDH between 1984 and 1995, Michel Tubiana succeeded Henri Leclerc as president of the association between 2000 and 2005, before becoming honorary president.

He was also honorary president of EuroMed Rights and former vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), the association said in a statement.

“Lawyer, tireless activist for the defense of human rights in France and in the world, he was one of the essential links of the LDH, a beacon, always available and always clear-sighted”, writes the LDH, which addresses its “more sincere condolences to his children ”,“ relatives and friends ”.

In a black dress, Michel Tubiana notably pleaded as a civil party in the trial of Maurice Papon in 1998, or even defended the co-founder of the far-left armed group Direct Action Jean-Marc Rouillan.

One of the “peacemakers”

He was one of the “peacemakers”, members of civil society and linchpins of the “disarmament” operation of the Basque separatist organization ETA, and he belonged to the “Bake Bidea” collective, which campaign for the rights of Basque prisoners.

More recently, he was the lawyer for two comrades of Clément Méric, an anti-fascist student killed in a fight with skinheads in Paris in 2013.

“We are devastated, we are losing a great man who, by his intelligence, his intellectual acuity and his quick-wittedness, was truly a reference for the League”, responded to AFP Malik Salemkour, current president of the LDH .

“He was still very invested”, “constantly alert on the news and he constantly spurred us on to be rigorous, firm, with regard to the law and fundamental values”, he added.

For the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, “a great voice has just died out. The best tribute we can pay him is to prolong his fight for human rights ”.

The N.1 of EELV Julien Bayou greeted on Twitter a “great loss”, the “tireless fight” of Michel Tubiana.

For the communist Fabien Roussel, Michel Tubiana was “an ardent defender of our freedoms and human dignity”.

Alexis Corbière (LFI) sent his condolences to the family, to those close to Michel Tubiana, but also to all the “leaguers”.
