(CNN Spanish) – The indigenous community of Pilahuín in the province of Tungurahua, in the central highlands of Ecuador, organized an ancestral ceremony of handing over the “baton of command” to Guillermo Lasso, who on Monday took office as the country’s 47th president.
With music, dance and ancestral rites, the ceremony took place in the Tamboloma sector, where authorities and inhabitants of indigenous communities attended. The event revolved around the “chacana”, which is an Andean cross that symbolizes the union between the world and the human in the original cultures of the Andes.
«The delivery of this baton in this chacana means – in the indigenous world – to transfer the power of the peoples, the good wishes and the positive energies of the Pachamama, and to deliver the friendship, trust and commitment between the original peoples “Said Manuel Caizabanda, prefect of the province of Tungurahua.
After the delivery of the baton, Guillermo Lasso thanked the indigenous community. He also asked them to work together to improve living conditions in the rural and agricultural sectors.

Guillermo Lasso had broad support in the provinces where there is the largest number of indigenous communities in Ecuador, according to the results of the second round of the presidential elections of last April 11.
