Lava from a volcano in the Canary Islands has reached the sea – Denník N

In the Canary Islands, a stream of lava from a volcano reached the ocean, which became active last week. Experts have previously warned that contact of hot lava with salt seawater will lead to toxic emissions.

Large clouds of white steam rise from the water in the Playa Nueva beach area. On the video, which was filmed from an oceanographic ship, you can see the glowing lava rolling like a waterfall over the cliffs into the black waters of the Atlantic in the darkness.

However, according to the local volcanological institute Involcan, the danger of toxic fumes is limited to areas near the lava flow.

Due to the eruption, almost 7,000 people have so far had to leave their homes on the island of La Palma, and lava flows have already destroyed about 500 buildings.

Experts believe that the eruption of Cumbre Vieja, which is active for the first time in 50 years, could last up to three months. (reuters, čtk)
