After the announcement of a rise in gas prices, the Minister of the Economy warns that the rise in energy prices will probably last a few months.

Rising energy bills are a sledgehammer for households and businesses. On Monday, the regulator announced a 12.6% increase in gas prices, or 57% since January. This Tuesday, On CNews, Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy and Recovery, announced that this trend should “probably continue for a few months”.

“There are risks of an increase in electricity tariffs for the month of January 2022”, warned the minister on CNews, specifying that “the government is perfectly aware of the problem and sees perfectly how much this can weigh on household purchasing power “.

The Minister of the Economy denounced these increases between gas and electricity which are linked to European regulations.

“There is an aberration at European level. The gas boom has repercussions on the price of electricity. From an economic point of view it is absurd and from an ecological point of view it is inconsistent”, a reacted Bruno Le Maire, recalling that gas is a fossil fuel imported into France, unlike electricity.

The minister announced that a letter had been sent to the leader of the euro zone “to fundamentally transform the European energy market”.

“These outbreaks are unbearable. I cannot stand the correlation between fossil energy and nuclear energy,” said Bruno Le Maire.

To lighten the bills for households and businesses, the government will not lower taxes.

“The only one on gas is VAT and this is not the solution put on the table. We have no room for maneuver. The only one is the energy check”, indicated Bruno Le Mayor.

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced that households eligible for the energy check will benefit from a boost of 100 euros, in December, to help them cope with the rise in gas, electricity and fuel prices. Bruno Le Maire unveiled that in spring 2022, new aid of 150 euros will be released. The average increase in household bills is estimated at between 300 and 400 euros.
