Political scientist Michal Cirner considers the composition of those invited to the president to discuss the security forces to be balanced and non-partisan.

On Monday, President Zuzana Čaputová met with Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OĽaNO) and later with the chairman of the opposition Direction, Robert Fico. After her spokeswoman Martin Strižinec, she bequeathed that they were discussing the situation in the security forces. In the coming days, the president also wants to talk about this topic with the head of parliament Boris Kollár (We are a family) and with the leader of the non-parliamentary Voice Peter Pellegrini. “At meetings with them, he also plans to talk about how to calm the situation in Slovakia,” Strižinec added.

The president heard critical voices that, despite tensions in the security forces and in society, she was inactive, said political scientist Michal Cirner, evaluating the ongoing round of her deliberations.

“It may also be her reaction to the current opinion poll, where she is still the most trusted politician in the state, but she no longer has a so-called positive rating. This means that more people feel some negative connotations towards it. This may have activated her to become more involved in topics that are at the heart of the day, “says the political scientist.

Interestingly, the President has not yet invited all representatives of the government or coalition parties to such negotiations. There is no talk, for example, of Richard Sulík from SaS, who has the second strongest club after the transfer of members of For People in Parliament. However, Cirner considers the composition of the guests to be balanced.

“Among them are not only those who can really influence the state, such as the prime minister, but also representatives of the strongest opposition, so I consider the choice to be non-partisan, as I would expect,” says the political scientist, noting that these talks may continue at other levels.

Čaputová declares that she wants to calm the situation in society. At a time when the coalition speaks of its political opponents as a mafia that has robbed the state and, conversely, opposition politicians complaining about the criminalization of “innocent people,” it seems that cutting its edges is an unattainable goal. According to Michal Cirner, however, no one really assumes that she will succeed.

“The president may be particularly concerned about her representative powers. But it is also its job to connect and integrate. Listen to both sides and suggest some platforms where politicians can communicate. So the president has no choice but to try, because she is supposed to be a symbol of that peace and a standard of morality, “the political scientist thinks.

He adds that he sees no intention in the timing of the meeting before the presentation of the report on the state of the republic on Tuesday, because it is being prepared a long time in advance and this report was usually delivered in the autumn.

However, it does not rule out that she used the personal meeting with Heger and Fico to let them know in advance what and whom she would criticize. “Then don’t be surprised. But I would rather say that these invitations are implemented on an ad hoc basis in response to criticism that it is inactive and to declining preferences, “concludes Cirner.

Zuzana Čaputová has not yet commented on the content or impression of the negotiations so far, and according to our information, she has also recommended it to the other participants in the meeting. “The Prime Minister told her that he was ready for all variants in the interest of maintaining political stability and also fulfilling the government’s program,” said Heger’s spokeswoman Ľubica Janíková.

After meeting on the social network, Fico informed that he called on the president to respond more strongly to “attacks by the governing coalition on the welfare state.” Fico considers the President’s “closing of the eyes to reality” to be inactive on the issue of “destruction of the rule of law and gross abuse of criminal law.”

Fico further claims that he “blamed the president for the failure of the referendum”. “I have informed the President that we will deliver two questions to her in the next petition and we will wait for her response. If he announces that he will not submit the questions to the Constitutional Court for consideration, we will start collecting signatures. If it decides to re-initiate proceedings before the Constitutional Court and try to thwart the referendum again, it will have far-reaching consequences for the seriousness of the presidency in the future and the entire political system, “Fico continued. In October and November, Smer intends to organize protest rallies, where it expects multi-thousandth participation. According to him, he can also protest against the head of state. He added that he had warned the president against the revenge of the current government, as the company is waiting for a whole round of legal proceedings, criminal reports and lawsuits, which will be a kind of satisfaction for the current government’s actions.
