Video of the incident was spread on social media during the day. On it, Macron can be seen walking among the people when, at one point, an egg hits his shoulder, but it doesn’t break and only bounces off. Two security guards immediately approach the president and cover him.

Reporters present at the scene heard Macron say: “If he wants to tell me something, let him come.” The authorities did not disclose any details about the identity of the man who threw the egg or the motive for his actions.

In June, Macron was slapped by a man when the president was greeting the public in a small town in southeastern France. Macron then responded by “continuing to go everywhere”, despite such manifestations of “stupidity and violence, which are unacceptable in a democracy.” Macron was then supported by politicians from across the political spectrum.

Macron, like its predecessors, often walks among people and greets them. In France, this is called “crowd bathing” and is a typical element of local politics. Until the next presidential election in France, just over half a year remains, and the 43-year-old Macron has not yet announced whether he will run for president again. However, his re-candidacy is generally expected.
