PETROHRAD – Luc Tardif has become the new president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The 60-year-old Frenchman replaced Swiss René Fasel, who has been at the head of world hockey for 27 years.

And the new IIHF President is … Luc Tardif! He was elected after four rounds in the presidential elections.

The new boss was decided by the delegates of the semi-annual IIHF Congress in Saturday’s election in St. Petersburg. “What I offer is my determination, a crazy passion for the sport, a sense of teamwork, respect for other people and my sincerity. Trust me, I will do my best to meet expectations.” quoted Tardifa portal iihf.com.

Tardif, who also has Canadian citizenship, was not the biggest favorite in the fight for the presidential chair, but among the five candidates, he managed the marketing component of the campaign the best. As stated by the hockeyslovakia.sk portal, the experienced official personally circulated several IIHF member federations before the election and sent strong promotional materials to others. He also left a strong legacy on Friday during the presentation of candidates. In each election round with the gradual elimination of unsuccessful candidates, his support increased. In the end, it resulted in a duel with the German Franz Reindl, whom he conquered with 67 votes in the final 4th election, which represented 63.21 percent of the total number of delegates. Other unsuccessful candidates were, in addition to Reindl Bielorus Sergej Gončarov, Danish Henrik Bach Nielsen and Czech Petr Bříza.

Tardif has been active in IIHF structures for many years, since 2012 he has been a member of the IIHF Council. Born in Trois-Rivieres, Canada, where he began playing hockey at the age of three, he came to Europe in 1975. He first landed in Brussels, later moved to Chamonix, France, and finally to Rouen, where he successfully developed a youth hockey program. In 2006, he became the first president of the newly created French Hockey Federation. He was re-elected in 2010, 2014 and 2018. He is currently an important structural component of the French Olympic Committee. In 2014, he was the leader of the French delegation to the Sochi Olympics.
