Sudan thwarts coup attempt, arrests 40 officers, senior officials say

(CNN) – On Tuesday, a military coup attempt in Sudan failed. Most of the officers involved were detained, according to three senior government and military sources.

Some 40 officers were detained after trying to seize the buildings of the state television and the military general command, said a senior government source.

Following the attempted coup, the Sudanese military dispersed throughout the country’s capital, Khartoum.

A military statement is expected to be issued later on Tuesday.
