Archbishop Ján Babjak of Prešov, the highest-ranking representative of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia, fell ill with covid. The coronavirus became infected during the visit of Pope Francis, the media reported.

“The Conference of Bishops of Slovakia (KBS) has not yet specified how many other bishops and priests are in quarantine,” the TVnoviny.sk server noted. “The question is whether the pope himself must be quarantined,” he added.

KBS spokesman Martin Kramár told Marquis that all those who may have been in contact with Archbishop Babjak were informed. He confirmed that KBS had also informed the Vatican. According to the spokesman, all bishops are vaccinated.

Babjak, as Michal Pavlišinovič, a spokesman for the Archbishopric of Prešov, confirmed to the daily Sme, learned last Thursday about the positive result of the test of the Greek archbishop, with whom he was at the Eucharistic Congress in Budapest from 4 to 8 September. Subsequently, this Greek archbishop, together with Pope Francis, also visited Slovakia, from 12 to 15 September. Babjak withdrew to the home quarantine immediately after the positive test. According to Marquis, she has only mild symptoms of the disease.
