Afghanistan, Taliban evict homes: thousands in the square in Kandahar

Thousands of people took to the streets today in Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, to protest the Taliban’s decision to evict homes belonging to the families of former members of the security forces. The protests took place outside the headquarters of the Kandahar governor’s office after the Taliban ordered 3,000 families to leave their homes within three days, according to information gathered by the Jaama news agency. Demonstrators blocked one of the main entrances to the city. Some of the families have lived in these houses for more than thirty years. According to Jaama, an Afghan journalist reported being beaten by the Taliban while following the protests.
