When Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová appeared at an audience with the Pope in December last year, the public was not only interested in the fact that he accepted her invitation to visit Slovakia. The wardrobe of the Slovak head of state also attracted attention.

Zuzana Čaputová visited a private audience in the Vatican dressed in a black dress and with a veil on her head – exactly as the protocol and decades-recognized rules dictate. The Pope has fulfilled his promise and has been in Slovakia since Sunday, with his first steps during Monday’s official program leading to the country’s president. Čaputová also welcomed him at the airport on Sunday.

As in the case of the Vatican audience, the head of state entrusted the design of his ceremonial wardrobe to the well-known designer Boris Hanečka. With regard to the individual activities that they completed together during his visit and also with emphasis on the appropriate rules of etiquette (length of clothes, color, veiled hands, etc.).

It is clear to us that the point of the papal visit to the country is not to exaggerate fashion, the result in the form of Čaputová will certainly excite many. So far, Zuzana Čaputová has performed two clothing creations and a third is planned, which she should wear during the pope’s departure from the country. From head to toe, it is a kind of flagship of domestic creation, as one of the most famous domestic designers, Boris Hanečka, takes care of her dress, she has pumps from her home brand Catherine Mulier (which is backed by Katarína Sásiková) and the jewelry was prepared for her (as several times in the past) by Nataša Štefunková.

The first day was marked by distinctive green coats, in which the president stood at the Bratislava airport of Milan Rastislav Štefánik to welcome the Holy Father. The rich shade refers to the symbolism of nature, and Boris Hanečka in this case was mainly inspired by ecology, Slovak forests and the life that is born in nature. At the same time, it was one of the shades that was also present in his other fashion collection – also significantly inspired by nature.

Zuzana Čaputová was not to be overlooked on Monday morning, when Pope František met her on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Palace. The intense blue color on the tube dress with finely accentuated sleeves and a square neckline, which was subtly decorated with hand embroidery by Noemi Kolčáková-Szakalová, was very elegant and worthy of such an exceptional event.

Enthusiasts of the pro-ecological approach in fashion were especially pleased with the fact that the president subsequently recycled one of the older fashion pieces. She complemented the dress with a white cape from the time of the inauguration in June 2019. Of course, also from the workshop of Boris Hanečka.

The blue dress itself, the shade of which was directly magnetic, was a bit like the creation from the Vatican, in which Zuzana Čaputová met Pope Francis for the first time, both in terms of type and style. In that case, however, the décolleté was tightly covered up to the neck and had to wear dark stockings instead of body stockings. The exposed blond curls at that time were covered by a black veil in the shape of the Slovak landscape with black pearls, which symbolized some exceptional places.

The protocol stipulates that almost all women who visit the Pope in the Vatican should wear black clothes and their hair must be covered by a veil. Of course, the rules of the official dress code also affected the current form of the president. The basis is shrouded shoulders and the length of the dress below the knees. The necklines are not recommended or are very decent – as in the case of a square neckline of blue clothes. It is also necessary to avoid the colors that are usually worn by senior church officials present at official meetings, such as white, cyclamen or yellow.
