Facebook launches connected glasses designed with Ray-Ban – 01net.com

Facebook has just formalized its connected glasses which are very similar externally to the Wayfarer, Round and Meteor models. And for good reason, they are designed in collaboration with the famous manufacturer Ray-Ban, and its Italian parent company EssilorLuxottica.
The Ray-Ban Stories have two 5 megapixel sensors for taking photos (2592 x 1944 pixels) or videos (minimum 1184 x 1184 pixels, at 30 fps). A concept reminiscent of that of Snapchat shows, less 3D.

It will not be possible to make long holiday films, however, as the videos are limited to 30 seconds. Facebook says the glasses have a small LED that lights up to indicate that they are recording a video or taking a photo. But it will undoubtedly be possible to mask the diode and the device will then continue to operate.
In addition, a button allows you to completely turn off the cameras and microphones of the device. Captured photos and videos are encrypted and an attempt to pair with another user account automatically deletes them.
In short, Facebook tries to reassure users about their privacy and has even posted a microsite for this purpose.

The Ray-Ban Stories feature three microphones and accept optional voice commands, starting with Hey facebook (only in English for the moment). Their storage capacity is not specified, but they accept according to the manufacturer up to 500 photos or 30 videos of 30 seconds.

A dedicated app

The glasses communicate through Bluetooth and 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) interfaces. They work with a brand new application called Facebook View. This allows you to import, edit and share photos and videos. It is compatible with most social networks: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter, TikTok and Snapchat.

The editor specifies that the user can precisely control what content is imported and on which networks it is shared. In addition, the app only collects the data necessary for the correct functioning of the device (battery status, email address, password, Wi-Fi settings). It is possible to prohibit the collection of additional data such as the number of photos taken.

On the endurance side, Facebook announces an autonomy of 6 hours and a full recharge in 70 minutes with the storage case provided. It has the equivalent of three additional charges.

They replace headphones

Finally, the glasses have small speakers in the branches that allow you to listen to music or podcasts. The user can control playback and volume, without needing to take out their smartphone. And you can even use them to make and receive phone calls.

The Ray-Ban Stories are sold from 299 dollars and 329 euros in the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and the United Kingdom. Facebook has not yet specified when they would be available in France.
