(CNN) – Novak Djokovic is two wins away from his 21st title and the calendar’s first men’s singles grand slam since 1969.
The Serbian, world No. 1, defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini, No. 6, in four sets on Thursday at Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the US Open semifinals. Djokovic, who defeated Berrettini to win Wimbledon earlier this summer, is now 4-0 against the 25-year-old Italian.
The 34-year-old Djokovic is tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for 20 major singles titles, the most in men’s tennis of all time.
The last man to win the Grand Slam on the calendar – the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year – is Rod Laver.
Djokovic’s next opponent will be Germany’s No. 4 Alexander Zverev, who defeated South African Lloyd Harris in straight sets on Wednesday.
The men’s semifinals are scheduled for Friday; No. 2 Daniil Medvedev of Russia and No. 12 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada will face off on the opposite side of the draw.
The women’s semifinals will take place on Thursday. First, Leylah Fernandez of Canada will face No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. After that match, Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, the top seed to reach the US Open semifinals in the Open era, against No. 17 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece.
