A military parade took place in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, from Wednesday to Thursday local time. An agency source, Jonhap, said only that he was noticing “signs” of a military parade after midnight.

The parade took place on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the DPRK, and Kim Jong-un also took part in it. The DPRK last organized a military parade in January, just days before the inauguration of US President Joe Biden, the AFP agency recalls.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea celebrates its 73rd anniversary on Thursday. The NK News portal, which deals with the situation in the DPRK, said on Twitter that late Wednesday night people could be seen preparing for the start of the tour at Kim Irsen Square in Pyongyang, Reuters reported.

According to NK News, the roads were closed. NK News and 38 North reported last week that satellite images show soldiers who were probably preparing for a military parade.

A few months ago, during a similar parade, the North Korean regime introduced a new ballistic missile that they can fire from a submarine. Last October, Kim Jong-un showed new intercontinental ballistic missiles – for the first time in two years, the DPRK demonstrated long-range weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in August that North Korea appears to have relaunched a five-megawatt plutonium reactor at the Jongbjon nuclear facility. The IAEA called this development “deeply worrying”.

The international community has imposed sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear program, which has been hampering the economic development of this isolated country for many years. The consequences of natural disasters and the coronavirus pandemic have exacerbated the situation there.
