ZURYCH – A global group of national football leagues has opposed the idea of organizing the FIFA World Cup every two years instead of the previous four. The World Leagues Forum has thus joined the association of European clubs and the European Union UEFA, which have previously criticized FIFA’s efforts.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA Global Development Director Arsene Wenger came up with the idea of organizing a top football event every two years. A detailed long-term Arsenal coach is scheduled to present a detailed plan on Thursday.
Impact on the economy and the health of players
“The World Cup in a two-year cycle would negatively affect the football economy and damage the health of players on an already busy calendar,” said representatives of the World Leagues Forum, which brings together the most important league competitions from five major football continents.
Infantino said that a possible change in the cycle could be decided by the end of this year. Critics of the proposal include fan organizations, who argue that it is impossible to travel to a top event every 24 months. At the time of its operation, Infantino had already pushed for the expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams from 2026.
