The presidential election in Brazil has already started. Haranging a crowd of tens of thousands of supporters Tuesday, September 7 in Sao Paulo, far-right President Jair Bolsonaro estimated that “only God” could oust him from power and multiplied the attacks on the institutions and the Brazilian electoral system. “We want clean, verifiable elections, with the public counting of votes. I cannot participate in a farce like the one promoted by the Higher Electoral Court”, he said in front of the yellow and green crowd of supporters massed on Paulista Avenue.

By calling his supporters for massive demonstrations across the country on the National Day, Jair Bolsonaro wanted to show off strength, when he has never been so weakened in his nearly three years in office. He is given the loser against ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for the October 2022 election, his popularity rating is at its lowest and he is weakened by numerous investigations opened at the request of the Supreme Court against him.
