The geneticist pointed out the vaccination of children: The benefits continue to outweigh the risks, consider a vaccine for THIS! – Topky.sk

According to the geneticist from the Genotypes project Dominika Valent Raffajová, the vaccination of children is generally a controversial topic. This is due to the mandatory vaccination. Children should go through these vaccinations, however, there are certain groups of people who literally refuse to vaccinate children. And the vaccination of children against coronavirus is also a controversial topic. Vaccination of children over 12 years of age is currently approved.

However, according to the geneticist, parents should consider vaccinating children if they have a risky profession and meet a lot of people. She also pointed out that attending schools may be more risky for children at present. “In several countries where the school year has already begun, cases of COVID-19 are on the rise, Raffai explained. She added that in connection with the fact that children have been mainly at home and not in schools for the last year and a half, which increases their mental illness.

“If it is the only person in the bubble who is not vaccinated, we can reduce the chances of bringing the infection home by vaccinating the child. If children have close relationships and frequent visits (or live together) with their elderly or clinically endangered people, it is good to think about vaccinating the child. ” the geneticist stated. She also pointed out that if a woman is planning a pregnancy or if she is pregnant, it would be good if she only met people who are vaccinated, thus minimizing the risk of infection. “Last but not least, it is necessary to perceive the local percentage of total vaccination, in some areas it can be relatively high, in others relatively low. This affects the general risk of infection, “ the scientist wrote.

Beware of risk factors

She added that at the beginning of the pandemic, experts and scientists thought that the children were not affected by the new coronavirus, or that they had only mild or mild symptoms, which is more or less true so far. Children have more asymptomatic infections, which last on average shorter than adult infections. However, even children can have a serious course and be hospitalized.

“Approximately half of children hospitalized for COVID-19-related reasons have risk factors such as immunosuppression, cancer, chronic lung or heart disease, or neurological disease, for example. Currently, however, the main problem is the new more infectious variant of Delta, which in combination with a more or less vaccinated adult population will be more targeted (otherwise) by the younger age group, which is not vaccinated. ” Raffaj explained that while the available data point to an increase in infections and hospitalizations in children, no data suggest an increased rate of coronavirus deaths or a more severe course in children.

PIMS scarecrow

According to the geneticist, it was interesting that when they compared the overall data on the deaths of children from coronavirus with the average annual deaths of children from smallpox before approval against the virus that transmits them, this number was twice as high. “This also gives us perspective on how much we can perceive children’s vulnerability to COVID-19. However, what is a big scarecrow is the so-called PIMS or MIS-C. It is a pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome and occurs in one hundred and hundred thousand children, with most children having asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection 3 to 6 weeks before PIMS. the geneticist pointed out, noting that the children in question also have risk factors, most often obesity. In developed countries, the mortality rate of hospitalized children with PIMS is around one percent, in Slovakia these data are not publicly available, but several cases of child deaths during the last year are known.

In addition, parents should be aware of the risks associated with postcovide syndrome, which may persist for several months after a mild infection. However, according to available data, it occurs in a smaller percentage of children than in adults. “As COVID-19-related measures are being relaxed in many countries, there is an increase in other respiratory diseases and pediatricians are concerned about possible co-infections with common respiratory viruses and SAR-CoV-2. These common respiratory viruses regularly fill hospitals in the colder months, even without an ongoing pandemic, and even though children have an “action” immune system, it can be challenging for them. “ Raffai explained.

What are people’s opinions?

According to her, despite the current recommendation to vaccinate children over 12 years of age, it is expected that vaccinations for children from 5 to 11 years of age will also be conditionally approved during the autumn or winter. She also pointed out that already in mid-August, more than 10 million teenagers were vaccinated in the USA. She added that in Europe, opinions on the vaccination of children vary from country to country, but in Germany, for example, they recommended the vaccination of all children, due to the spread of the delta variant. Britain, on the other hand, is recommended to vaccinate mainly children with a predisposition to more severe coronavirus. However, experts called for a reconsideration of this view. She also drew attention to a published article where the probability of infection was mathematically calculated if the critical vaccination schedule were maintained only for adults and some children over 12 years of age.

“If only 18+ and very strictly 12+ were still vaccinated there, it is assumed that up to 60 percent of new infections in humans would be under 18 years of age, if the 12+ group were vaccinated in general, this group’s mortality would probably be reduced by 57 percent and long covid by 75 percent, “ she added that 24 percent of children aged 12 to 15 were vaccinated in Slovakia in mid-August. She also pointed out that although young men and teenagers developed inflammation of the heart muscle after the second dose of the vaccine, this was a short-term side effect and the benefits of the vaccine still outweighed the risks.

“CDC Director Rochelle Walensky recently explained that if we vaccinate one million children with mRNA vaccines, we expect approximately 30-40 cases of mild myocarditis, but we have also prevented 8000 cases of COVID-19, 200 hospitalizations, 50 JIS stays and one death in this age group.” “ the geneticist pointed out, saying that we had no or theoretical indications that vaccination would cause long-term side effects or affect fertility. Finally, she asked her followers on the social network if they could vaccinate their children and if they were in favor of vaccinating this group of the population. As many as 79 percent of people voted for the option rather yes, 21 percent for rather not.
