Experts are clear in this regard. According to gynecologist Jozef Záhumenský, they clearly recommend the best vaccinations, with the exception of women, who could have contraindications. In this case, however, they may have patients who are not pregnant. Pregnancy alone does not play a role.

“A pregnant woman has exactly the same contraindications as a non-pregnant one. This means that there is no specific complication or pregnancy problem that would say that I cannot be vaccinated for this. It is therefore recommended for all women who do not have a contraindication, such as severe immune conditions or allergies, ” stated the vaccination in an interview brought by the Bratislava self-governing region.

The antibodies pass to the baby

If a pregnant woman can be vaccinated, the vaccine will affect the baby. This is because it is born with antibodies. “Antibodies from the vaccine persist in the baby’s body for three months. However, we do not know how much the newborn is protected, because we cannot yet accurately measure this effect.” said the expert.

A child has antibodies even if a woman is breastfeeding after being vaccinated. After the second dose, they pass into the milk in massive form. “Their presence has been proven, but there is not enough data to assess how protected the child is from Covid-19. I think it is, but further research is needed. Vaccination during breastfeeding is strongly recommended for women, it is safe.” claims.

Diseases in pregnancy

On the contrary, what the doctor has pointed out are the risks associated with the disease during pregnancy. The risk of a serious course of the disease is then higher. Especially in cases where the expectant mother has any of the risk factors. These include older people over 35+, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, including pregnancy.

For example, the gynecologist also pointed out that a woman’s lungs are more vulnerable during pregnancy. A pregnant woman will also develop pneumonia rather than a non-pregnant woman. “It is even known that when a pregnant woman gets Covid-19 in the third trimester, she has a higher risk of preterm birth.” pointed out. The birth of an infected mother is also complicated. “I had several such patients and fortunately there were no major complications, but of course they can occur. Such a birth is complicated in itself.” stated.

The question of vaccination is also being addressed by doctors about a world where the approach is changing from country to country. In general, however, doctors favor it. One of the most radical is the American Society, which claims that all healthcare professionals who come into contact with a pregnant woman should be vaccinated. The reason is to reduce the risk of transmitting the infection, but also the fact that others set an example. However, any doctor who comes into contact with a pregnant woman should also be interested in whether she is vaccinated and, if not, should offer her such an opportunity. “If a woman refuses, she should write it on the card with the reason why she refused, and next time she should check it again to see if she has changed her mind.” explained Záhumenský.

However, even there, experts recommend vaccination. “It is interesting in Germany, where the gynecological and obstetric society clearly recommends that pregnant women be offered vaccination against Covid-19,” he said. However, the Koch Institute of Infectious Diseases is a little less radical. In their opinion, the procedure should be selective and women who are at risk of infection during pregnancy should be addressed.

The Czech professional society, in turn, claims that vaccination should be offered to all, and especially women, who are at risk.
