France “condemns the attempt to seize power by force” in Guinea and calls for “the immediate and unconditional release of President Alpha Condé”, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published Sunday, September 5 in the evening. Guinean special forces officers said earlier in the day that they had captured the head of state Alpha Condé and announced “dissolve” institutions, but great confusion reigns in Conakry over who is in control.
The ministry of Guinean Defense for its part assured to have repulsed the attack of the special forces against the presidency, despite the dissemination of a video showing President Condé in the hands of the coup leaders. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned on Twitter this “coup” and asked for release “immediate” by Alpha Condé.
I am personally following the situation in Guinea very closely. I strongly condemn any takeover of the government by force of the gun and call for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde.
