Jan Hecker, the German ambassador to China, died at the age of 54, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.

The report comes just days after former adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel took office in Beijing, according to the AP.
“With deep sadness and horror, we learned of the death of the German ambassador to China, Professor Dr. Jan Hecker. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at the moment, “the ministry said in a statement on its website.
The ministry did not provide further details on when and where exactly the ambassador died.
Hecker, who became ambassador in August, was married and had three children, according to his CV on the State Department’s website.
