BERLIN – Sunday’s duel of the South American qualifying for the 2022 World Cup between Brazil and Argentina was interrupted shortly after its start due to a dispute over pandemic measures. These were to be broken by four Argentine players.
“The meeting in Sao Paulo lasted only a few minutes, when several officials came to the border and came into conflict with players and team members,” informed AFP. The intervention sparked a dispute around four Argentine representatives, who according to the Brazilian authorities are suspected of violating pandemic measures. These are a quartet of players from the British clubs Emiliano Buendia, Emiliano Martinez (both Aston Villa), Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso (both Tottenham Hotspur). Of them, Romero, Lo Celso and Martinez figured in the basic line-up of the Argentine team.

The quartet arrived in Brazil last week. However, special conditions apply to the United Kingdom, India and the Republic of South Africa, including a 14-day quarantine upon arrival in Brazil. “Players who arrived from Caracas to Guarulhos have declared that they have not stayed in any of the restricted countries for the past two weeks.” The DPA cited a statement from the Anvis Health Authority.
However, the Office allegedly has information at its disposal, according to which four players provided false information in the forms. “It was an investigation into a possible violation of pandemic measures and other sections of the Penal Code.” Anvis said in a statement. According to the authorities, players should be quarantined or deported from the country.
