Schinas: The influx of migrants in the east of the EU may lead to the adoption of common rules – PRAVDA.sk

European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas said on Saturday that the influx of migrants to the EU’s eastern states could lead to common European migration rules. Schinas said this during a visit to Lithuania, where thousands of migrants from the Middle East moved from Belarus this year. The AFP agency informed about it.

“The situation here is another message for us in the European Union that now is the time to move to a more predictable and comprehensive European framework for migration policy,” said Schinas, European Commissioner for the European way of life, during a visit to Lithuania’s border with Belarus.

The European Commission proposed a new pact on migration and asylum in 2020, in the hope of creating faster migration processes and stronger governance of migration and border policies. However, Schinas said the talks had stalled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The EU accuses Belarus of organizing the influx of migrants to Latvia, Lithuania and Poland in retaliation for EU sanctions against the Belarusian regime.

Recently, the EU is also concerned about the possible influx of migrants from Afghanistan after the Taliban movement took control of the country.
