As CNN noted, the assembly was relatively small – only a few dozen protesters can be seen in the published video of the protest – but it was an unusual public challenge for the Taliban government.

Women demanded access to education, the right to return to work and a role in governing the country. They carried banners with inscriptions such as “Freedom is our motto. We are proud of it”. The Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 15 after seizing the capital, Kabul. The movement is currently negotiating the formation of a new government. It has previously stated that women should also be a part of it.

The Taliban has already announced that its rule will be more moderate than in 1996-2001. The Taliban regime was and is known for its own interpretation of Islamic law and the degrading treatment of women, who at one time were not allowed to study or move freely in public. However, after the recent domination of Afghanistan, the Taliban declared that his government would be “more inclusive”.

However, many are skeptical about whether the Taliban has really changed its stance on women, or whether it is only a short-term effort to get the movement recognized from the international community. On Thursday, a small group of about 50 women protested in the city of Herat in western Afghanistan. “It is our right to have education, work and safety,” chanted in the streets of the city.
