President Giammattei announces new measures for covid-19 in Guatemala

(Cnn in Spanish) — This Thursday, the president of Guatemala, Alejando Giammattei, announced on national television that he will send a request to Congress early on Friday with new measures for the covid-19 pandemic and said he expects it to approve them in the next three days.

Among the measures that the president asks the congress are:

• Restriction that avoids the agglomeration of people for a period of no less than four weeks where all group sports activities and social gatherings are prohibited
• Restriction of mobility from 8:00 p.m. on one day to 4:00 a.m. the next day. Within this regulation there will be exceptions in essential sectors so that Guatemala does not stop: health personnel, lawyers, fully identified journalists, among others.
• Implementation of vaccination brigades

Giammattei said that limiting mobility during these hours will give a break to the hospital system, which, he said, is already collapsed.

To date, the Guatemalan Ministry of Health registers 479,376 accumulated cases of covid-19 and 12,098 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
