Viewers remember her mainly from the film Desperado (1995), or as a representative of the non-conformist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. On Thursday, September 2, Salma Hayek celebrates 55 years.

Salma Hayek Pinault (formerly Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez) was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos to a well-to-do family of Mexican opera singer and Lebanese businessman (this explains the actress’s Arabic first name).

She attended a Catholic school in New Orleans and lived with her aunt in Houston, Texas as a teenager. She enrolled in international relations at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, but left school to prioritize her acting ambitions.

She succeeded in the Mexican capital when she was 23, when she was cast in the soap opera Teresa (1989). Three years later, a young budding actress moved to Los Angeles to try her luck in Hollywood. After her role in Mi vida loca (1993), she was approached by director Robert Rodriguez, who happened to see her appearing on television, and the actress impressed him with her views. He offered her a role in a pilot film for the television series Fast Wheels (Roadracers, 1994). However, the real turning point for both the young actress and the beginning director was the action film Desperado (1995), in which Salma Hayek played with the Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. The film was a success with the audience, it was also appreciated by professional critics, and it just provoked a wave of outrage in the actress’ native Mexico.

Under Rodriguez’s direction, Salma Hayek played a seductive vampire dancer in the thriller From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), including George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino. In the romantic comedy Fools Rush In (1997), viewers can remember her alongside Matthew Perry. Two years later, she played the exotic dancer and muse Serendipity in the satirical film Dogma (1999). A biographical film about the painter Fride Kahlo, which Hayek produced and also starred in the main character of the famous artist, was a great success. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance. Frida (2002) received a total of up to six nominations for this prestigious award. Finally, the film took the statuettes for masks and the best original music.

Hayek has earned critical acclaim for her directorial debut The Maldonado Miracle (2003). The drama, set in a small California town that is the scene of an alleged miracle, won the artist an Emmy Award. She also performed in the action film West Then in Mexico (Once Upon a Time in Mexico, 2003) with Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp. She portrayed the thief and companion Pierce Brosnan in the film After the Sunset (2004). As a spirited Mexican, Camille introduced herself in a romantic drama about the American economic crisis, Ask the Dust (2006), based on a novel by John Fante.

Salma Hayek also worked as the executive producer of the successful television series Ugly Betty (Ugly Betty, 2006 2010), set in a fashion magazine. She also starred in this sitcom. She embodied the ruthless gangster in Oliver Stone’s film Savages (2012). She portrayed a former prostitute who defied her boss in the action film Everly (2014). A year later, as the Queen of Longtrellis, she introduced herself in an Italian fairy tale called The Tale of Fairy Tales (Il Racconto dei Racconti).

The husband of the famous actress became the French magnate François-Henri Pinault, with whom he has a daughter.
