BRATISLAVA. The new school year 2021/2022 has begun. According to the Minister of Education Branislav Gröhling all schools have opened completely.

Gröhling opened the school year at the model school on Tomášikova Street in Bratislava. The Prime Minister also attended the opening with him Eduard Heger.

In his speech, he thanked his parents, students, but also teachers for mastering the past school year. He pointed out that we had never been so happy about the beginning of the new school year as we are now. He reminded that education is a priority for this government.

Čaputová also pointed out climate change

President Zuzana Caputova participated in the opening of the school year at the Dubová Primary School in Bratislava. During the opening ceremony, she met with the school management.

The head of state also spoke to primary school students, who wished them a lot of strength for the new school year. “We all want it to be more standard so that children can really go to school, study and keep in touch with their friends,” the president remarked, pointing out that the previous two years had been detrimental to education and had mental health consequences.

The president chose the Dubová primary school in Bratislava because she deals with the topic of mental health. It has various programs to support children and to be able to help themselves or seek help from adults. “It’s an important topic and I’m glad that schools are working on it,” she said.

In her speech, the President also pointed to climate changes. “We all know that the latest reports issued by the UN say that the planet has a serious problem. Time is short and action is needed,” she said. She encouraged students to think about how they spend their natural resources and, for example, if they need another new plastic toy.

She promised the children that she would try to do everything possible in the field of the environment from her position.

More than 700,000 students

706,825 pupils will attend primary and secondary schools this year. For the very first time, 65,622 children will sit in school desks, they are primary school freshmen.

The situation from last year should not be repeated, schools will no longer be closed due to a pandemic. TASR informed the Department of Communication and Marketing of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and sports.

509,704 pupils return to primary schools, including special schools. According to information from the Department of Communication and Marketing of the Ministry of Education, the increase in the total number of primary school pupils in comparison with the 2020/2021 school year is 23,425 pupils.

A total of 191,121 students will attend secondary schools, including special secondary schools. Among them are 42,105 freshmen. The decrease in the total number of secondary school pupils in comparison with the school year 2020/2021 represents 5414 pupils.
