In this last part of the Vuelta 2021, it is a key day for the general classification this Wednesday September 1st. The 17th stage with a length of 185.8 kilometers, which starts from Unquera, ends in Lagos de Covadonga, one of the legendary climbs of the Spanish Grand Tour. With strong percentages, the best climbers will be able to stand out and create differences. A few days before the finish, will Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) manage to remain the bearer of the red jersey, at least one more day in this 76th edition? Strong with three difficult climbs

This mountain day will start smoothly with around thirty fairly affordable kilometers, without major difficulties. Then it gets complicated with the Altu de Hortigueru (5.3 km at 4.7%). Among the four listed climbs, this remains the least difficult. After a transition of about forty kilometers, the ascent of La Collada Llomena will then start. With its 7.6 kilometers at 9.3% average, it’s obviously a big chunk. For the runners, it will even be double the dose of this climb with only an interval of 35 kilometers.

At the end of this sequence, there will still be 56 kilometers to go. A large part of this distance will have to be covered on a downward then flat portion. And it will harden considerably in the last 12.5 kilometers, or the equivalent of the ascent to reach the top of the Lagos de Covadonga. With an average slope of 6.9%, but above all regular passages above 10% will be able to allow the fittest runners to widen gaps.
