The vote adopted the Declaration on September 1, and will submit it to parliament – PRAVDA.sk

The non-parliamentary party Hlas adopted the Declaration on Wednesday, September 1, on the Day of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.

It emphasizes that power comes from the people and that citizens have the right to correct the activities of politicians even during the election period. At the press conference, party leader Peter Pellegrini informed that the declaration would be signed by non-attached parliamentarians who are members of the Voice and submitted to the National Council. Pellegrini called on the three highest constitutional officials and members of parliament to subscribe to the principles of the declaration.

The vote also wants to reach a referendum in this way to shorten the term. Therefore, according to the former prime minister, the declaration states that the referendum is a fully constitutional, democratic and legitimate tool for promoting the will of the people.

“It is the highest form of personal, civic and political opinion. The Constitution of the Slovak Republic must clearly and unquestionably define the legal conditions for holding a referendum, and it is the duty of the National Council of the Slovak Republic to amend the wording of the constitution so that the possibility of holding a referendum does not raise any questions, “Pellegrini stated.

According to the declaration, the will of the citizens expressed by the constitution and the required number of signatures under the petition for a referendum must not be ignored and its fulfillment cannot be unnecessarily postponed.

“Constitutional officials must act in such a way that the referendum requested by a sufficient number of citizens is held as soon as possible. The will of the citizens of the Slovak Republic expressed by the valid results of the referendum must be binding for the deputies of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and politicians must respect the decision of the citizens, “said Pellegrini.

The leadership of the Voice called on the highest constitutional officials to recognize the power of the people on the Day of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic as the only sovereign power in the Slovak Republic. They call on members of parliament to approve the declaration and on the governing coalition to allow the necessary amendments to be made to the laws in a shortened legislative procedure and, in accordance with the declaration, to allow a referendum to be held as soon as possible. The vote sees a solution in changing Parliament’s Rules of Procedure and amending the Constitution.

The Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic recently ruled that the referendum question on shortening the term of office of the National Council of the Slovak Republic is unconstitutional. The petition for a referendum on early elections was initiated by the opposition with trade unions, supported by more than 585,000 people.
