“Tact”, “flexibility”, “pedagogy”. For almost a month, hospitals have been redoubling their efforts to deploy a measure controversial: the verification of the health pass at the entrance of visitors and patients (except in emergencies), as instituted by the law relating to the management of the health crisis in force since August 9.
The device had raised strong fears in the medical community about the risk of impairing access to care. When examining the text, the deputies voted for its abolition, before it was reinstated at second reading at the request of the government. The Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, then defended the need for hospitals “Sanctuaries far from the Covid”, while ensuring that access to care would be preserved.
In the field, to hear the representatives of hospital managers, doctors, users… up to the staff unions, for some opposed to the measure, it was applied without great difficulty. “Under pressure from doctors, checks are carried out flexibly in a good number of establishments, relates Christophe Prudhomme, emergency doctor and CGT manager. It belongs “Sometimes a few clashes and tensions”, mainly when accompanying persons and visitors remain blocked at the entrance.
“The first days of implementation were not easy, but overall, things are going well”, abounds Vincent Roques, of the Hospital Federation of France, who estimated the cost of the measure to 60 million euros per month.
No patient refused
“We had no violence or protest at all, while Toulon appears to be one of the strongholds of anti-pass demonstrators, reports Clarisse Audigier-Valette, pneumo-oncologist at the Toulon hospital center. We feel the people are quite disciplined, they have understood the interest of the past. If they have it, it protects their loved ones and the hospital ”, resumes the doctor, who recalls the obligatory nature of barrier gestures and the wearing of a mask in the hospital enclosure.
On the patient side, this need to have proof of a complete vaccination schedule, a negative test of less than 72 hours or a certificate of recovery only concerns “People received in health establishments for scheduled care”, we specify to the ministry. With a size exemption: the rule applies “Unless otherwise decided by the head of department or a representative of the medical or nursing staff” when a refusal could prevent a patient from being properly cared for.
