The public image of disputes weakens public confidence in the functioning of the prosecutor’s office as a whole. The President of the Slovak Republic, Zuzana Čaputová, stated this after a working meeting with Attorney General Maroš Žilinka.

“The President invited Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka to a working meeting last week in connection with the visibly tense relations between the General and the Special Prosecutor,” said President Spokesman Martin Strižinec. He added that the President stated that the head of the General Prosecutor’s Office was primarily responsible for the overall image and trust in this institution.

The Attorney General also informed about the reception with the President on the social network. “We had a very open and very serious conversation,” Žilinka remarked, quoting Albert Einstein’s statement, “which is correct, it is not always popular. And what’s popular isn’t always right. “

On 13 August, Attorney General Žilinka filed a motion to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Special Prosecutor Daniel Lipšic. He was to commit a disciplinary offense by, without knowing the file, arguing publicly, speculatively and misleadingly against the investigators of a specialized team of the Office of the Inspection Service in a legally unfinished criminal case that did not fall within the competence of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.

Lipsic pointed out that the statements fell at a time when false information about alleged “manipulation” was repeatedly spread in the media about the investigation of the most serious cases, even by public officials. He considered it his duty to stand up for investigators and prosecutors in matters supervised by the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
