Ida has done some damage. New Orleans is completely without electricity, Sunday evening, August 29, after the arrival of the hurricane in Louisiana. Classified in category 4 on her arrival on the coast, 16 years to the day after the passage of Katrina which had devastated this state in the south of the United States, Ida was finally demoted to category 1 around 6:30 am (Paris time). In total, more than a million homes are without power across Louisiana, according to a specialized site.

In a bulletin released early Sunday evening, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of the “fatal risk” created by the hurricane and urged residents of affected areas to “take all necessary measures to protect their life and property”. The US weather services have also issued a flood alert for the Louisiana towns of Hammond, Tickfaw and Ponchatoula. “This is a particularly dangerous situation and residents are urged to go to high altitudes as much as possible”, said the National Weather Service.

President Joe Biden for his part approved overnight the request of the State of Louisiana to declare a major natural disaster. This decision makes it possible to make federal funds available to disaster victims “for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover losses of uninsured property and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.”, according to the White House press release.
