In addition to the supporters of the festival and its partners, he also strongly thanked the spectators and invited them to the 56th year, which should take place from 1 to 9 July 2022. “We regret, with regret, the 55th International Film Festival over,” he delivered his traditional final sentence with an addition, which indicated that organizing this year cost more effort than usual.

In addition to Hawk, the festival also praised the British actor Michael Cain, who received the Crystal Globe for his extraordinary artistic contribution to world cinema from the opening evening. The third main star of this year was the American actor Johnny Depp, who especially pleased film fans with his presence.

On Friday, he presented the film Pot of Goldilocks: A Few Drinks with Shane MacGowan, which he produced and in which he also performs. He later introduced the film Minamata. He plays the main role of photojournalist William Eugene Smith, who in the 1970s revealed the circumstances of mass mercury poisoning caused by a Japanese chemist in the city of Minamata.

The film about two African migrants won

The winning film Strahinja was co-produced by Serbia, France, Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Lithuania. The humanistic film tells the story of a man named Strahinja and his wife Ababuo, who left Ghana with a vision of a better life in Europe. However, they ended up in the west in Serbia, where they were deported. Strahinja began to build a career, but Ababuo is not so lucky and one day he disappears. The film talks about the need to find its place in the world and about love, the deepest proof of which may be the most painful.

The representative of one of the two main heroes, Ibrahim Koma, also received an award from the Great Hall of the Thermal Hotel for his acting performance in this film, and Jelena Stankovićová received special recognition for her camera. Already in the afternoon, the film won the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the Europa Cinemas Label Prize for the best European film in the main competition and in the East of the West competition as part of the non-statutory prizes.

Special prize for a Czech documentary

The Czech documentary by Erika Hníkovová Every Minute of Life won a special jury prize in the Main Competition. Dietrich Brüggemann won the director’s award for directing the German film No! Eleonora Loiselle received the award for female performance for her role in the Canadian film Boje. The jury of the main competition also awarded three special mentions, in addition to the cameraman Stanković, to the Croatian film Zborovňa and Vinette Robinsonová for her performance in the British film Boiling Point.

The festival took place this year on a postponed date, the organizers moved it from the traditional beginning of the holidays in order to get more people vaccinated against the coronavirus and also with the belief that cinemas will be able to fill one hundred percent. Last year, the festival did not take place at all due to the pandemic, and this year the organizers prepared a special regime, where each participant of the festival had to get a hand strap proving its infectivity before entering it. He then checked it every time he entered the festival premises.

People could also be tested at the festival, out of more than 4,000 tests, according to the organizers, the only one was positive. 104,681 tickets were sold for the festival at 10 am this morning. In the last two years of the festival in 2018 and 2019, around 140,000 tickets were sold for the entire event. Due to the pandemic, people could not buy tickets online in advance this year, but only after arriving in Karlovy Vary and obtaining the mentioned tape.
