CABLE. The Taliban movement deployed more patrols around the airport in the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday to prevent the grouping of large numbers of people after Thursday’s bombing, the AP agency reported.

The Taliban has set up new checkpoints on the roads leading to the airport, which are supervised by its members in uniform. They also fired several warning shots on Saturday.

The areas around the airport, where large crowds of people have gathered in the last two weeks in the hope that they will be able to get out of the country, are now almost empty, writes AP.

Many countries such as Italy which Britain has meanwhile completed its evacuation operations in advance of 31 August, which the US President Joe Biden set as the final date for the departure of US troops from Afghanistan. There are only a few days left until the complete end of the evacuation.

Thursday’s attack by terrorists from the Afghan branch of the Islamic State (IS) group claimed the lives of 13 American soldiers and wounded another 18. The exact number of Afghans killed is not yet known.

According to the British BBC, at least 90 people were killed and another 150 were injured in the attack. However, al-Jazeera’s Pan-Arab station writes of at least 110 victims. The American station CBS reported at least 170 killed.

The Afghan Taliban movement said at least 28 of its members had died in the attack.

Original reports spoke of two bombings. However, according to a Pentagon statement on Friday, there was only one explosion at the airport gate by a suicide bomber.
