Scientists have discovered an island off the coast of Greenland, which they claim to be the northernmost continental area in the world. The small island was discovered by a Danish-Swiss scientific team in July during a research expedition.

The goal of the scientists was to obtain samples from another Arctic island, Oodaaq, which has been known since 1978 as the northernmost island in the world. When they checked their location, they found that they were 780 meters away.

The hitherto unnamed island has dimensions of 60 × 30 meters and represents the nearest land point to the North Pole, scientists said after consulting the other experts, the station informs. BBC.

The island is without vegetation; it consists of a muddy surface, the remains of a moraine and marginal sea ice. The researchers said they wanted to recommend that the island be named Qeqertaq Avannarleq, which means “northernmost island” in Greenlandic.

Greenland is an autonomous Arctic territory belonging to Denmark. It gained media attention in 2019 when former US President Donald Trump declared that the US was interested in buying Greenland. Copenhagen called it “absurd”.
