Daniel Balavoine: the ambiguous confidences of his daughter Joana, traumatized by her status of “posthumous child” – Closer France

While he was on the Paris-Dakar race, It was on January 14, 1986 that the artist died in a terrible helicopter crash at the age of 33. At home, his wife Corinne was pregnant with their second child, Joana, who never knew her father. In an interview with Paris Match, the latter explained: “To be a posthumous child is the first seed. But it is not only that. I am built on this trauma. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t allowed to have a daddy. Because of this absence, I had no limit … And as my father was Daniel Balavoine, I was also given a lot of things. It was complicated to live with this myth.“

Proud of the career and of the man that was her father, Joana Balavoine confided: “I am proud to carry this name! I am very lucky. It’s great to stand up and say, ‘My daddy was a good guy.’ Thanks to his heritage, I also have the chance to live comfortably. But there is a flip side to the coin: this great duality in all my history, that of having had a father as absent as he is present. In the eyes of the people there is a terrible projection. It’s heavy sometimes. But my name is no excuse. Trauma is found in all families.“As she used to take drugs when she was younger, the image of her father helped her get by.”I told myself that I couldn’t continue to lie like this, to live in this illusion. That I couldn’t destroy his legacy. I wish he was proud of me. As I once did, I no longer have this ambition to live up to his talent. But I didn’t wanna be a rotten person“, she assured.

How is Joana Balavoine today?

If she had to grow up without a father and went through many hardships, Daniel Balavoine’s daughter is much better today. She has in fact ensured: “I’m fine. I live in the countryside, I cultivate my vegetable gardens. I want to travel. I’m still making music and working on a duet with Seemone. I also think of children, I would like to do workshops for them …” For Paris Match, she even confided in dreaming of becoming a mother.
