TikTok bans the Milk Crate Challenge, deemed too dangerous

On social networks, challenges of all kinds are legion, and we must admit that they are not always very smart. After having warned Internet users against “Silhouette Challenge” – which invited Internet users to have the waist as thin as a sheet of paper, – or against the “Scalp-pooping Challenge” – which consists of pulling on your hair until it makes a cracking sound, doctors are now worried about a new trend, that of Milk Crate Challenge.

A new trend on social networks, the Milk Crate Challenge consists of filming yourself climbing an unstable pyramid of milk crates. The idea is not particularly clever, and it often ends in spectacular falls, as well as large bruises. On social networks, several American emergency physicians are thus alerting against the risks of fractures and hemorrhages.

TikTok reacts

To try on its own scale to stem the buzz of the Milk Crate Challenge, TikTok for its part decided to ban the hashtag #milkcratechallenge from its algorithm as well as the search results related to this type of content. In response, the social network simply indicates “This sentence may be associated with behavior or content that violates our rules”. On the French application, searching for the dedicated hashtag provides access to several videos criticizing the challenge, but none directly featuring it.

For their part, the Baltimore health authorities have also warned Internet users against this dangerous challenge, which comes at a critical time for the city, whose emergency services are already saturated by covid-19 cases. It is also recalled that in addition to risking their health, young American adolescents who lend themselves to this challenge risk paying the price for their stupidity, at a time when the American health system is still very poorly reimbursing health costs.
