Two more medals guaranteed for the French Paralympic team in Tokyo! Sandrine Martinet, in para-judo, and Dorian Foulon, in track para-cycling, will aim for a gold medal in the morning, Friday August 27th. But they won’t be the only ones aiming for a medal after a rich night.
Para-judo: Sandrine Martinet one step away from a new Paralympic title
The flag bearer of the French delegation is very close to succeeding in her bet. Descended to the under 48 kg for the Tokyo Games, Sandrine Martinet qualified for the final, five years after her Paralympic title in the under 52 kg. She will face Azeri Shahana Hajiyeva for the gold medal shortly after 9am.
Silver medalist in Athens and Beijing, Sandrine Martinet will add a 4th medal to her Paralympic record. Now it remains to determine the color.
Para-cycling on track: Dorian Foulon assured of a medal, Kévin Le Cunff will aim for bronze
The French para-cycling believed in a double for gold on the C5 pursuit! Dorian Foulon and Kévin Le Cunff both broke the discipline’s world record. But two other competitors came between the French. Result: Dorian Foulon, fastest qualifying time, will go for gold against Australian Alistair Donohoe, and Kévin Le Cunff will fight for bronze for Ukrainian Yehor Dementyev. A 5th medal already assured for the Blues, and a potential 6th.
Para-swimming: new final for Alex Portal, Nathan Maillet does not pass
4th in the 100m butterfly on Wednesday, Alex Portal will have another chance at a medal. The French qualified for the final of the 400m freestyle S13 with the 3rd time of the heats. Entered in the 200m freestyle S14, Nathan Maillet finished with the 16th and last time in qualifying. Obviously insufficient to reach the final.
Para-athletics: the Mandy François-Elie rocket goes into the final of the 200m T37
No worries in the playoffs for Mandy François-Elie! The French sprinter qualified for the final of the 200m T37 by winning her race in 27 seconds and 48 hundredths. With this time, she provisionally set a new Olympic record, almost a second below the previous one (28.47 in 2000). But the Chinese Xiaoyan Wen did even better (27 “16) in the wake. The final will be held at 12:16.
Armchair rugby: first victory for the Blues against Denmark
After two losses against Japan and Australia, the French wheelchair rugby team has its first victory in the Paralympic tournament. Captain Jonathan Hivernat and his teammates dominated Denmark (52-50), vice-champion of Europe, after a close meeting from start to finish. To qualify for the semi-finals, the Blues (3rd, 2pts) must now hope for a Japanese victory (1st, 4 pts) by at least three points against Australia (2nd, 2 pts).
Para-table tennis: Léa Ferney in the semi-final, Florian Merrien in the quarterfinals
Youngest member of the delegation at 17, Léa Ferney joined the semi-finals of the S11 category tournament. The French won her last group match, against the Ukrainian Natalya Kosmina (3-1). With this second victory in three games, she secured a place in the last four. She will face Japan’s Maki Ito on Saturday at 4 a.m.
In the men’s category, Florian Merrien won his 8th final category 3 against the Brazilian Davide Andrade de Freitas. A solid victory three sets to zero, including an 11-1 in the last set. He will face China’s Wiang Zhai in the quarterfinals.
