According to McKenzie, the risk of further terrorist attacks around the airport remains extremely high and can occur “at any time”. In addition to other suicide attacks, there are also threats of attacks by vehicles or missiles, he added. However, the general refused to confirm or refute reports that there were other attacks in Kabul outside the airport.

According to a high-ranking Afghan medical official, at least 60 Afghan civilians were killed and 150 injured in the mentioned bombings at the airport.

The attacks, which were also condemned by the Taliban, provoked outrage abroad. Among others, they were condemned by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg and the President of the European Council Charles Michel.
