Defending champion Chelsea London will meet Juventus Turin, Zenit St. Petersburg and Malmö FF in the basic H-group of the Champions League.

The national team tracker Milan Škriniar will be the only Slovak footballer in the year 2021/2022 with a chance to play in the main stage.

His club Inter Milan will compete in the D-group with the record 13-time European champion Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and Sheriff Tiraspol. It was decided by Thursday’s draw in Istanbul.

It was drawn from four performance baskets. Chelsea was the first to defend the trophy together with the reigning UEFA Europa League winner Villarreal CF and the six champions of the countries best placed in the European Football Union (UEFA) rankings consisting of Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, LOSC Lille, Sporting Lisbon.

From the second basket, the teams have been represented according to the club coefficient for the past five years. The second clubs included Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Juventus Turin and Paris SG. The only newcomer in the main phase is Sheriff Tiraspol.

The Moldovan champion on the way to the elite eliminated up to four opponents – Teutu Durres, Alaškert, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade and Dynamo Zagreb.

26 clubs had a direct participation in the main phase of LM, six got into it from the qualification (four from the championship branch, two from the non-championship branch). The draw divided the clubs into eight groups of four, in which everyone will meet each system at home and abroad.

The first two will advance to the spring eight-finals. At the draw, the rule was that clubs from one country could not meet in one group.

Likewise, clubs from Russia and Ukraine could not run into each other. The exact program of the group phase will be published by UEFA no later than Saturday morning.

This year is already the 67th in the elite European competition, respectively. 30th, since UEFA introduced the Champions League. The first round of the group phase is on the program 14./15. September. The final will be played on Saturday, May 28, 2021 at Krestovsky Stadium in St. Petersburg.
