Afghanistan, Taliban: “Music will be prohibited”

Music will be banned in public in Afghanistan under the new Taliban regime. This was announced by the spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, in an interview with the New York Times. “Music is forbidden in Islam, but we hope we can persuade people to give up without having to exert pressure,” he said. The ban is similar to the one in force between 1996 and 2001, in the years in which the Taliban controlled the country. According to Newsweek, Mujahid is running for the post of Minister of Information and Culture in the new government.
