Governor in Colombia leaves the country for alleged plan to assassinate a paramilitary group

(Cnn in Spanish) — The governor of Magdalena, Colombia, fled the country after receiving news of an alleged assassination plot against him, according to the Colombian Commission of Jurists (CCJ).

The legal representatives of Governor Carlos Caicedo of the CCJ issued a statement on Wednesday indicating that the governor left the country on August 19.

According to the CCJ, the Magdalena government said that a highly reliable source informed Caicedo on August 14 of an alleged plot by the paramilitary group Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia.

The statement said that the Magdalena army and police confirmed the threat.

Caicedo’s lawyers added that the complaint has been formally presented to the President of Colombia, Iván Duque, the Attorney General’s Office and the Director General of the Colombian Police, as well as the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to coordinate a safe return of the governor and his family.

“With concern we receive information about death threats against the governor of Magdalena Carlos Caicedo. We condemn these threats and follow up on their case, in accordance with our mandate, ”tweeted UN Human Rights in Colombia.

So far there have been no public comments on this case from the Colombian presidency, the Attorney General’s Office, the police or the army. CNN is trying to contact those offices to get a reaction to the complaint.
