Peter Sagan last raced in July as part of the 11th stage of the Tour de France. A day later, due to a knee injury, he left the most prestigious race. He had to go for surgery with his knee on fire. After a short break, he gradually started training before the last race block of the season.
In recent days, Sagan has been entertaining fans with videos from a training camp in Andorra. Together with his brother Juraj, they diversified the program on mountain bikes and showed technical skills on local trails.
The Sagans decided to lay the groundwork for the final part of the season in the Pyrenees. Its highlight will be the World Championships and the classic Paris – Roubaix. In September, Peter will perform for the first time in his career at the home races around Slovakia.
It will be among the favorites
The European Championships are on the agenda just before the Slovak stage. The race with a mass start will be on Sunday 12 September. The national “tour” will start in Košice three days later. The track in Trento, Italy, records cyclists like Peter Sagan. The almost 180-kilometer track will take place on a circuit. In its middle is the climb Povo (3.6km and 4.7%), it will be finished on the plain.
Peter Sagan said in a press release: “My recovery is going well. I train intensively to get to my best level. I can’t predict the course of the European Championships, but I can promise to leave everything on the track for the best possible result. “
“It is clear that the European Championship has grown properly since 2016. I don’t know to what extent my triumph helped, but I’m glad I contributed at least a little. I am sure that this year will be the starting field of the highest level, which will guarantee an interesting race. “
The first continent road cycling championship in the Elite category took place in 2016. Sagan won gold in France. However, he never wore a jersey intended for European champions, thanks to the successful defense of the rainbow jersey for the world champion. In the following years, Alexander Kristoff, Matteo Trentin, Elia Viviani and Giacomo Nizzolo rejoiced at the triumph.
This year’s complete start list is not out yet, but we already know that Belgian superstar Remco Evenepoel, Around Flemish winner Kasper Asgreen, two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogačar and triumphist Giacomo Nizzolo will fight for precious metals.
The World Championship in Flanders, Belgium will take place right after Around Slovakia. Sagan will win the last race in the colors of the German team Bora – Hansgrohe on the queen classic Paris – Roubaix. After Hell North, Sagan will end the 2021 racing season, as well as a five-year anabase in Bor. For the next two seasons, he will ride for the French team TotalEnergies.
