The Afghan girl, who was born last weekend aboard an American plane flying from the Middle East to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, was given the name “Reach”, referring to the machine’s code. A U.S. military official announced this on Wednesday.

After Saturday’s arrival at the US base in Germany, an American medical team came on board and helped the woman give birth in the cargo hold of the US Air Force’s strategic transport aircraft C-17. The mother and child were then transported to a nearby medical facility.

Each US Air Force aircraft has its own code designation, which is used to communicate with other aircraft and control towers. C-17 transport aircraft are usually called “Reach”, followed by the number.

The evacuation plane on which the child was born was called the Reach 828, said US General Tod Wolters, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). He added that the parents with the newborn are on their way to the United States along with other Afghan refugees.

Two other babies were born at the US military hospital in Landstuhl, whose mothers were also on a plane bound for Ramstein.

Of the 7,000 people evacuated from Kabul who had passed through US bases in Europe since August 20, only a hundred required medical care. Of these, 25 were admitted to hospital and 12 have since been released.
