US and Britain warn of threat of terrorist attacks at Kabul airport – PRAVDA.sk

The US Embassy in Kabul has warned US citizens not to come to the airport in the Afghan capital for security reasons. The situation is dangerous at the airport gates, the US embassy warned on Thursday night.

“U.S. citizens staying at the Abbey Gate, East Gate or North Gate should leave immediately,” the U.S. embassy website said. The only exceptions are those who have received individual instructions from representatives of the US government.

The German embassy also warned of gunfire and impending terrorist attacks at Hamid Karzai Airport in Kabul. Travel recommendations for Afghanistan were also updated by the British Foreign Office on Wednesday. Britain warns its citizens against any travel to this troubled country. London cites the “high threat of a terrorist attack” as a reason.

“If you are in the airport area, move to a safe place and wait for further recommendations. Commercial flights are not currently operating. If you can leave Afghanistan safely in another way, you should do so immediately, “the British Department of Diplomacy said in a statement.

Citing Wednesday, CNN reported to a U.S. defense official on a “very specific threat” to planned attacks on crowds waiting at the airport by the Afghan branch of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, known as the Islamic State in Khorasan (IS-K), including Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The IS-K, which is the main enemy of the Taliban, wants to cause chaos at the airport, according to the USA, and is allegedly capable of carrying out several attacks. Concerns have risen after more than 100 prisoners loyal to IS-K escaped from two prisons near Kabul, CNN said, citing an unnamed regional source in the fight against terrorism. US President Joe Biden also acknowledged the growing threat of IS-K attacks on Kabul airport on Tuesday.

IS-K, which first appeared in Syria and Iraq, has strengthened its presence in recent years in eastern Afghanistan, particularly in the provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar.

In August last year, his supporters attacked the main prison in the city of Jalalabad in an effort to free dozens of their supporters, who were captured by Afghan army forces and police.

They also formed their cells in Kabul and since 2016 have committed several suicide attacks in the Afghan capital and beyond. In May of this year, they attacked a girls’ school in Kabul, killing at least 68 people and injuring more than 165.
