Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have agreed by telephone that their countries will step up their efforts to combat the “threats” arising from the situation in Afghanistan, where the Taliban has taken power.

According to the Kremlin, the two leaders expressed “their readiness to step up their efforts to combat the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking from Afghanistan.”

At the same time, the pair agreed to intensify bilateral cooperation and also to make the most of the potential of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), whose members are to meet next month for a summit in Tajikistan.

Several former Soviet republics in the Central Asian region, where Moscow has military bases, share a border with Afghanistan and China.

Putin: Moscow has learned its lesson

As AFP recalls, although Moscow was initially perceived the new leadership in Kabul with cautious optimism, Putin warned on Tuesday against Afghan militants coming from Afghanistan to neighboring countries and posing as refugees.

Putin also criticized the involvement of external powers in Afghanistan’s internal affairs. He also said that Moscow had “learned” from the decade-long invasion of the Asian country by the Soviet Union and was not going to engage militarily in Afghanistan.

After the Taliban came to power on August 15, China announced its readiness to deepen “friendly and cooperative relations” with Afghanistan, AFP said.
