(CNN) – Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, will miss the last tennis tournament of the year, the US Open, to recover from a torn hamstring.
Williams announced the news on social media this Wednesday.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to fully heal from a torn hamstring,” Williams wrote on Instagram.
“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play – I will miss seeing the fans but I will be cheering for everyone from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. See you soon.”
For the past three years, Williams has been chasing the all-time Grand Slam singles record of 24 championships held by Margaret Court.
