The US has poured billions of dollars into Pakistan

Understandably, Taliban fans are mischievous. Between 2002 and 2018, the US government provided more than $ 33 billion in aid to Pakistan, including about $ 14.6 billion under so-called “coalition support funds” paid by the Pentagon to the Pakistani military. At the same time, Pakistan has taken care of the failure of US efforts in Afghanistan by secretly hiding, arming and training Taliban fighters.

“We find ourselves in an incredibly bizarre situation where you pay the country that created your enemy to fight that enemy.” Sarah Chayes, a former adviser to the head of the Joint Corps of Chiefs of Staff, said in a telephone interview with WSJ. “If you wanted to win the war, you had to intervene in Pakistan. Double game of Pakistan

The Pakistani generals required victory in the “double game” – ostentatiously to help America, while secretly supporting its enemies – enough dexterity. Washington has always backed away from fears of instability in more than 200 million nuclear-weapon states. “Pakistan is a suicide bomber the size of the whole country,” Chayes added. “The message that Islamabad is sending is: ‘If you get too close to us, we will detonate.'”

The generals are in the mood

Now the world will probably see that instability anyway. Meanwhile, the Taliban’s victory will fulfill decades of long efforts by the Pakistani military to gain “strategic importance” to control Afghanistan. But it will not satisfy the generals – it will only encourage their appetite.

Prior to the September 11, 2001 attacks, Taliban-controlled Afghanistan was used as a training ground for anti-Indian jihadist groups such as Lashkara Tajjaba. Afghanistan has also provided the ISI with a way to divert responsibility for terrorist attacks traced to territory under the control of Pakistani military intelligence.

Given the Taliban’s close ties with groups such as al-Qaeda and Lashkara tajjab, only those who deliberately pretend to be naive can trust the Taliban’s assurance that it will not allow Afghan territory to be used to attack other countries.

Extreme interpretation of Islam

The symbolic significance of the army of fanatics who have embarrassed the world superpower can hardly be exaggerated. The Pakistani military will strengthen the influence of those who view Afghanistan not only from a geopolitical point of view, but also as the fulfillment of a religious project rooted in an extreme interpretation of Islam that avoids any Western influence.

Former Pakistani senator and Pashtun rights activist Afrasiab Chattak warned in a telephone interview with the WSJ that there are about 36,000 madrasas in Pakistan – religious schools, some of which are militant. “The same places that the Taliban was born in are producing similar people in Pakistan,” he said. “And they will also seek power in Pakistan,” he added.
