LONDON. The drummer of the legendary British band The Rolling Stones Charlie Watts died at the age of 80. Referring to the statement of his agent Bernard Doherty, the AFP agency informed about it.

According to Doherty, Watts died at a London hospital on Tuesday surrounded by his family. “A beloved husband, father and grandfather and one of the greatest drummers of his generation have left,” the portal quoted Doherty as saying. BBC.

“We are very sad to announce the death of his beloved Charlie Watts,” the statement said. The family asked for respect for the privacy of his loved ones, band members and close friends.

The always elegant Watts was one of the best dressed rock stars. Compared to Jagger, however, he rather avoided living in the spotlight. He was also known for his moderate family life.

Watts has been a member of the Rolling Stones since January 1963, when he joined singer Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards and second guitarist Brian Jones and joined their budding band.

Multiple Grammy winners have hits such as (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Wild Horses, Brown Sugar, Paint It Black, Jumpin ‘Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man, Gimme Shelter, Angie and Start Me Up.

They have sold an estimated 250 million copies of the recordings. Ten of their studios are in the list of the 500 best albums of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine, and in 2004 the magazine ranked the band fourth in the ranking of the 100 best artists of all time.

In year 1989 they inducted them into the Rock’n’roll Hall of Fame. So far, the last album Blue & Lonesome was released in December 2016. Watts, Jagger and Richards have remained members of the band until today.

Watts was treated for throat cancer in 2004. The BBC announced in early August that Watts would not take part in The upcoming tour of The Rolling Stones in the United States to recover from an unspecified medical procedure.
