A Cantabrian farmer climbs a tree to avoid being attacked by a bear

The animal was devouring one of its goats It complains that the bear has been hanging around the area for “three months” The Ministry assures that dissuasive measures are already being applied A rancher from Yebas (Cabezón de Liébana) was seen yesterday afternoon surprised by a bear that he was devouring one of his goats, after which he had to climb an oak tree to avoid a possible attack. , Friday, around 5:30 p.m. when he went, accompanied by his young son, to collect his flock. When he called the goats, which, as he has indicated, usually come alone to the call, he saw how they and the dogs began to run scattered, which made him fear that there might be a wolf. While trying to gather the herd, the rancher “fell face” with a bear that was eating one of his goats. At that moment, Pedro explained that he began to shout and make noises to try to scare to the animal that, after “pretending” to go after him, continued eating the goat. To protect himself, the man climbed an oak that was “10 or 15 meters” from the bear and the goat, where he remained for a half an hour, which, as he has acknowledged, was “eternal”. In that time he saw how the bear ate the goat and, at the same time, “controlled him”, even “pinning himself”. Finally, after repeated calls, the animal took what was left of the goat and took it away, at which point the rancher was able to get down from the tree and flee to his house. However, he has recognized that he still has the fright in his body. The rancher has reported the event to the Department of Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries, Food and Environment of the Government of Cantabria, which, as he has assured, has already been had previously informed him that the animal had been around the area for “three months”. of cattle. “One day a misfortune is going to happen,” said the rancher, who has asked the Ministry for measures so that what has happened to him does not happen again. In fact, he believes that this bear “must be killed” and does not believe that the solution is to take it to another area, which, in his opinion, would be transferring the problem to others. The council, after a couple of bears For its part, from the Ministry they have confirmed to Europa Press that the rancher has been in contact to report the event. Sources from the department headed by Guillermo Blanco, have explained that the agents of the Natural Environment have been “a few weeks” behind a “couple of copies of bear” that are causing “a bit of alarm” in the area. They have detailed that there is an action protocol to act in these cases and dissuade bears from approaching the towns and causing problems. This protocol has three levels, with different action measures, and in the case of this bear, those corresponding to level 1 and 2 had already been activated, in which different dissuasive elements have been used, such as firecrackers, to try to keep it away from the area. situation ” more or less controlled” and they are usually enough, but after knowing the event, the controls are going to “intensify” and in these days the situation is going to be assessed “to take those measures that are necessary following the protocol”. They have instructed the agents of the natural environment to accompany the farmer to supervise the area in case he can be located. From the Ministry they have explained that the level 3 measures contemplate the possibility of capturing the bear, sleeping it and moving it to another place in which does not pose a danger, although they have warned that this has only happened twice in Cantabria because all the autonomous communities in which Picos de Europa extends must agree.
